Paola Gianturco's Celebrating Women exhibit, photographs of festivals that honor women in six countries, opened on March 9, 2009 at UNESCO head-quarters, 7 place de Fontenoy, Paris, France.

Celebrating Women was shown as part of the organization's International Women's Day event, a month-long celebration arranged annually by the Division for Gender Equality, Bureau of Strategic Planning.

The Celebrating Women exhibit originated in 2008 at the Field Museum in Chicago where it was on display for seven months and was seen by 195,000 visitors.

Women Who Light the Dark Showcases 23 inspiring women-led groups in 15 countries who are using creativity to tackle the intractable problems that darken women's lives. Royalties benefit The Global Fund for Women. Celebrating Women Features 17 festivals in 15 countries on 5 continents that celebrate women’s achievements, roles, rites of passage, and spiritual lives. Viva Colores Explodes with images and stories of 41 inspiring Guatemalans who experience color as an expression of valor and meaning. Royalties from this bi-lingual book benefit The PAVA Foundation. Women Who Light the Dark Profiles 90 women artisans in 12 countries who are feeding and educating their children. Royalties benefit Aid to Artisans, The Crafts Center at CHF and more.
Paola Gianturco Biography

 

Paola GianturcoPhotojournalist Paola Gianturco has documented women’s lives in 40 countries and has created four books as philanthropic projects.

 

Her images have been exhibited at the United Nations, The US Senate, The Field Museum/Chicago, The International Museum of Women/San Francisco, The Museum of the African Diaspora/San Francisco, The Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Washington DC. She has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN and NPR. Her pictures have been published in Marie Claire, Harpers Bazaar, The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Betty Makoni, who is featured in Women Who Light the Dark, was selected as a CNN Hero in November and won a $25,000 prize, which will be used for the Girl Child Network in Zimbabwe, the nongovernmental organization that she founded. UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador, Nicole Kidman, introduced Betty at the awards ceremony.

In Her Hands: Craftswomen Changing the World, which features women artisans on four continents, is the inspiration (and textbook) for a new undergraduate course developed by visual arts scholar Penelope Miller at Coastal Carolina University. Her students create crafts such as pottery and weaving to understand multicultural
diversity, art and identity in the developing world.
